July 8th Update

Our garden this year is quite awesome for its variety, lushness and deliciousness.  Here's a list of the things we have growing and the latest news on each.

Zucchini was our first crop and it's been quite abundant this year.  I think we're getting to the end and next week I'll be looking for those plants that are still blooming and cull the rest.  The first planting of squash is pretty spent too but Susie and I planted a second set of plants a few weeks ago and hopefully we'll continue to harvest for awhile.

Cucumbers are doing well.  We've had a few overgrown "yellow" cukes but not as many as last year.  Susie planted another set of cucumbers by seed but the deer snacked on them a little so I'm only slightly hopeful that we'll get more cucumbers.

Watermelons are starting to grow nicely and I'll do a little bit of research to see how big this black diamond variety is going to get so that we harvest on a timely basis.  Here's a pictures of one of the larger ones.

Beans, (pole, bush and lima) are doing well but again the deer has been snacking on them too.  I keep looking for some sign that we'll be harvesting soon but nothing yet.

Cotton is growing and I've noticed my first "boll" of cotton.  I'm very excited about the cotton.  I can now claim to be a "Southern farmer" because I grow cotton.

Brussel sprouts are doing well, so is the cauliflower and the red cabbage and fennel.  I had to harvest the Korean (napa) cabbage because it was succumbing to the heat.  I'll be making a stir fry soon.

Corn is doing ok, but some of the newest corn has fallen over from either the rain or maybe the deer slept in it.  The Indian corn is very pretty and I'll keep it for fall decorations.

And now for the tomatoes!!  Love the wide variety of tomatoes we have this year.  We have all sizes, cherry, juliettes, plum, slicing and a variety of colors, red, green and yellow/gold.  LOVE LOVE LOVE IT.

In the next post, I'll share some of my new favorite recipes for zucchini and tomatoes.

Great day at the farm!!!  Got all the plants into the dirt, romaine and red leaf lettuce, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage and collards!!!

We also cut a path into the strawberry patch and replanted the strawberries that were growing on top of the landscape fabric.

MANY THANKS to Dete, Al, Sharon, Dave for all their hard work.  And we had a visit from Scotty, Beth's dog who had an excellent adventure in the woods and discovered a nice smelly pile of something to roll around in.  Don't know about anyone else, but Taylor, Scotty and I are exhausted.  Great job everyone.  Let's plan a bonfire early in November at the farm.  We can cook up some farm fresh grub and chili of course!!

Stilll plenty of room to plant some other cook weather crops.  Beets?  Brussel Sprouts?  Garlic?  Onion?  Still have a lot of small tomatoes and peppers galore!!  Don't forget about Sungarten Farm!!
